My Approach to Coaching

 

The language in the life coaching world can often sound clichéd. Everything’s about “empowering your authentic self” and “unleashing your limitless potential.” After a while, it starts to sound more like a motivational poster than a real conversation.


That’s not what this is.


This isn’t life coaching with a cheesy grin and fairy tale success stories.  I’m down-to-earth, straight-talking, and not here to recycle mantras. This is for men and women  who want genuine change—not just a motivational buzz. No jargon. No hype. Just honest conversations and tools that actually help you change your life for the better. 


 

What Is Life Coaching? (and Why Bother With It?)



Life coaching is about helping you make real, lasting changes in the areas of life that matter most—whether that’s your health, relationships, mindset, career, confidence, or something else entirely.


Life isn’t just one thing. It’s a mix of everything: your work, your family, your physical and mental health, how you spend your free time, your friendships, your sense of purpose. When one part is off, it can affect the rest. You might feel like something's missing, even if everything looks fine on the surface.


As a coach, I work with you to take an honest look at where you are right now and where you'd like to be. We’ll explore the different parts of your life—what’s working, what’s not, and what needs attention. The aim isn’t perfection, but balance. When you start making small changes in one area, you often see positive shifts ripple through the rest.


Coaching isn’t about telling you what to do—it’s about helping you figure out what you want, what’s getting in the way, and how to move forward with purpose. Together, we’ll come up with a clear plan that fits your lifestyle, your values, and your goals.


Think of me as a sounding board, a strategist, and a bit of a kick up the backside when you need it. Whether you’re dealing with stress, stuck in a rut, drinking too much, glued to your phone, or just know you could be doing better — coaching gives you space to figure things out and the tools to actually do something about it.


Motivational Interviewing Technique

 

One of the key tools I use in coaching is something called Motivational Interviewing (MI). It’s not as fancy or fluffy as it sounds — but it is incredibly effective. Whether you’re trying to cut down on drinking, take better care of your health, sort out your priorities, or just stop feeling so stuck, MI helps you get moving in the right direction — for the right reasons.


So, what is it?


Motivational Interviewing is a proven, no-nonsense approach to behaviour change. It’s a structured, down-to-earth conversation style designed to help you explore your own motivations, get honest about what’s holding you back, and work out what change actually looks like for you. Not what society says. Not what your mate reckons. Not what you think you “should” do.


There’s no lecturing. No pressure. And absolutely no life coaching jargon. Just real talk — the kind that helps you hear yourself clearly for the first time in a while. It’s not always comfortable. In fact, it can feel a bit awkward or confronting at times but that’s when things start to happen. 


Here’s how it works:


  • You talk. I listen — properly.
     
  • I ask the right questions — not to fix you, but to help you figure things out.
     
  • We explore your ambivalence — the push-pull of wanting change but feeling stuck.
     
  • You uncover your own reasons for change — and start to build momentum that actually lasts.
     

It’s respectful, collaborative, and rooted in your autonomy — you’re in the driver’s seat the whole time. I’m just there to hold up the mirror, point out the blind spots, and help you work through what’s actually getting in your way.

Motivational Interviewing isn’t therapy. It’s not a lecture. It’s a powerful, practical conversation that helps you move from “I don’t know where to start” to “Right — let’s do this.”


 The service I offer is informal and friendly, but with a clear sense of structure and purpose. Think of it like having a relaxed chat down the pub — only this time, the conversation’s all about you, not your mate’s latest drama. It’s down to earth, focused, and genuinely about helping you move forward. 



I Coach the Person not just the Problem


That’s a key principle in how I work. Rather than jumping straight into fixing surface-level issues, I focus on you — your values, mindset, motivations, and the way you see the world. Problems often come and go, but when we work at the level of the person, we create lasting change that goes beyond quick fixes.

This approach means I won’t just hand you advice or ready-made solutions. Instead, I help you build self-awareness, resilience, and clarity so you can handle challenges with confidence, not just now, but long-term. Whether you’re dealing with stress, relationships, habits or direction in life, we’ll get to the root — not just treat the symptoms.
